Protect and Teach was established to promote high-quality education, safeguard the developing mind and encourage evidence-informed practice.

This page sets out the principles upon which Protect and Teach has been founded. It explains our vision for education, our mission as an organisation and the values that guide our work.

Central to our philosophy is a distinction between guardianship and education. Our guardianship role seeks to protect the conditions in which education can flourish. Our educational philosophy describes the qualities we believe education should seek to cultivate. Together, these principles inform our research, educational resources, public engagement and organisational development.

Our Direction

Protect and Teach CIC operates predominantly in the realm of guardianship in education.

Our vision is rooted in the defence of children through vigilant advocacy, scrutinising policies, guidance, educational materials and practice to help protect children from premature or developmentally inappropriate ideological influence in education.

This is the work of the citizen and the protector, engaged in the contest of ideas and the shaping of institutional boundaries.

We recognise that guardianship, however principled, is not education itself.

Our social and cultural advocacy work never influences or shapes our educational vision. The two realms remain entirely distinct, and that separation is rigorously maintained.

This distinction matters profoundly: one realm guards the gate; the other kindles character.

True education stands as the cultivation of the free mind.

It is the patient pursuit of wisdom through the open examination of reality in all its dimensions. It demands the presentation of every facet of a question, the weighing of evidence without favour, and the disciplined habit of independent thought.

To Protect and Teach, education is the flourishing of meritocracy, the honing of intelligence, the identification of individual talent and the pursuit of personal excellence.

This is enabled by the Enlightenment commitment to reason, evidence, individual agency and objective reality.

We embrace an approach that rejects every ideological lens which pre-determines collective thought or seeks to engineer outcomes and impose grievance and victimhood as normal.

Education’s purpose is not to shape the pupil into a vessel for any prevailing doctrine, but to equip the individual to seek truth and cultivate curiosity.

It must provide the tools and the space for the mind to encounter the world, evidence and counter-evidence as it truly is in all its fullness and complexity and, through disciplined work, to forge understanding and critical thinking that kindles the light of reason, merit and independent inquiry.

In this tradition, education becomes the rigorous formation of people capable of discerning truth amid the tempests of their age. This carries the awesome responsibility of seasoning personality into indomitable characters—fit for the adult future they will face, and not one that others wish it to be.

Protect and Teach exists to defend the developing mind and restore the possibility of true education.

Our mission is guardianship: to protect children from partisan ideological content in schools through scrutiny of policies and materials, support for age-appropriate education, and the firm defence of evidence-based behaviours and institutional integrity grounded in Enlightenment principles.

This guardianship never influences or shapes our foundational educational philosophy.

We act as guardians to protect that higher purpose.

For the full educational philosophy that underpins our work, please see our Values Statement below.

Protect and Teach is guided by the following core values.

Free Speech, Free Thought and Open Inquiry

We believe education thrives when individuals are free to think, question and explore ideas through reason and evidence, without suppression of legitimate viewpoints or evidence. We support an educational culture that encourages curiosity, intellectual freedom and open enquiry.

Reason Over Emotionalism

We believe education must prioritise evidence and reasoned argument over subjective emotion. It should cultivate intellectual resilience and the discipline of placing truth and logic first, enabling young people to develop clear thinking and strong character.

Guardianship and Truth

We are committed to protecting children from premature ideological influence and ensuring they are taught objective, evidence-based truth rather than contested ideas presented as established fact.

Age-Appropriate Guided Exposure

We believe children must be protected during their formative years while being prepared for reality as they mature.

  • Pre-12 – We support the removal of politicised or contested content from the primary curriculum so that schools can focus on foundational knowledge, character and intellectual rigour.
  • Post-12 – Children should receive guided, evidence-based exposure to complex topics, presented in its entirety with multiple perspectives, historically rooted and focused on temporal pattern-seeking.

This exposure should occur at the point when young people are required to grow into adulthood and confront the wider world.

Our aim is to equip them to develop independent judgement and indomitable character through reason and critical thinking.

Enlightenment Principles

We are committed to meritocracy, intelligence, talent and excellence, grounded in reason, evidence, individual agency and objective reality.

These principles form the foundation of true education and should remain free from political influence.

Guardianship and Non-Interference

Our advocacy work protects the ground for genuine education but never influences or shapes our educational philosophy.

We guard the gate so that the light of reason can burn undimmed.

Integrity and Transparency

We are committed to honesty, accuracy and transparency in our research, publications and educational work.

Where evidence changes, we believe organisations should be willing to review and update their positions accordingly.

To protect the developing mind and help cultivate indomitable individuals who can discern truth, think independently and stand sovereign in an age of ideological conformity.

This overarching goal unites our guardianship and our educational vision: to defend the innocent and promote the forging of minds fit for reality as it truly is.
