Template Letter: Parent/Carer Request for Information and Safeguarding Review: Changing-Room Supervision – England

Parents and carers do not need to wait until a child reports an incident before asking how their school protects pupils’ safety, privacy and dignity while they are changing.

This England-specific template helps parents ask their child’s school about its arrangements for supervising changing rooms during PE, swimming and other activities. It requests relevant policies and risk assessments and asks whether supervision ordinarily takes place from outside, when staff may enter, and whether direct supervision inside is normally undertaken by an adult of the same sex as the pupils.

The letter recognises that any suitable adult may need to intervene immediately in an emergency. Its focus is planned and routine supervision, appropriate professional boundaries and the reasonable steps schools can take to reduce avoidable vulnerability.

Parents can adapt the template to their child’s circumstances before sending it to the headteacher.
